About Me

Jack's background in litigation has given him a real advantage when reviewing and negotiating contracts as he knows where the traps lie. He uses the court system as necessary but, whenever possible, he will focus his energy on fair and workable negotiated solutions. Jack's extensive experience allows him to help his clients understand what's worth fighting about and what could be a waste of family or other resources.

Experience

Since being admitted to the Bar in 1980, Jack has practiced in Toronto. A partner with the firm since 2002, he focused on civil litigation early in his career before shifting mostly to family law and appearing at all levels of Ontario courts. The experience gained by adding a commercial component to his practice has proved invaluable in family cases involving corporate and other business interests which require unraveling and evaluation.

Recent Significant Engagements

  • Negotiated over 60 commercial leases for a major international fast-food franchise operation (ongoing);
  • Conducted family law trials on both sides of the “mobility” issue – when one parent wishes to move to another country with the children;
  • Negotiated numerous marriage contracts involving high net-worth individuals looking to exclude some or all of their assets from matrimonial division upon a separation; and
  • Negotiated and closed numerous share and asset sales in the health care industry, with a particular focus on pharmacy sales and purchases.

Recognition and Accomplishments

Jack was involved in legal education for many years, teaching courses for numerous Humber College law programs, the Certified General Accountants certification program and the Law Clerks Association of Ontario. He's also lectured at the Ontario Bar Association and other continuing legal education seminars and presentations.

Why I Practice Law

Jack sees too many lawyers escalate problems rather than solve them. Extended legal fights, especially in a family context, can leave permanent wounds that undermine the family relationships for decades after a divorce (because regardless of a divorce, a family remains a family). He feels very gratified if he can move all the parties (his included) towards a fair settlement that will pave the way to a civil and respectful relationship after the settlement papers are signed.

Out of the Courtroom

Jack is a guitarist and has played throughout his career, sometimes with working bands, sometimes just for fun with musical friends. It has been a passion since he first picked up a guitar and formed a high school band. Jack is also a motorcyclist and enjoys the bond that all riders share with each other, and the friendships that result.
